Distance in distanced education is not only geographic or spacial but is also transactional and dependant on social and psychological determinants.
Two variables that affect transactional distance in distance education are Dialogue and Structure.
Dialogue means the immediacy of communication between learner and teacher. So a correspondance course by mail would be at a much greater distance than a course by teleconference which would be further than a realtime online videochat.
The structure refers to the amount of flexibility designed into the curriculm and course materials and the amount of interaction between student and teacher. Control of communication and the amount to which the course is predetermined and invariable.
